Anxiety & Panic

Anxiety is a natural and essential emotion that keeps the individual safe. Anxiety is built up from life experiences that teach us what is an acceptable and what is an unacceptable risk for us to take. However if Anxiety grows out of proportion to the stimulant, and even seems illogical and inappropriate (without a direct identifiable stimulant or underlying cause) to the individual then it can become a "life-limiting" condition, and in its extreme form may result in panic attacks. A panic attack is a defensive, yet inappropriate, reaction that is designed to get the individual away from the source of the fear (which in many cases cannot be directly identified) to an apparent place of safety. The individual experiencing the panic attack is completely overcome with the need to escape and can think of nothing more, rational thought is totally absent and "instinct" takes over. Because for many suffering a panic attack there is not an easily directly identifiable cause the individual is likely to become even more anxious so worsening the panic state. In this way an individual can then find themselves caught up in a seemingly never-ending cycle of anxiety and panic.

Sleeping Difficulties

Many people will experience difficulty sleeping, that is getting to sleep and/or staying asleep at some point during their lives. Sleep difficulties are often associated with an under lying worry or anxiety, fear of recurring nightmares or a once learnt sleep “strategy” that in a different context no longer works.

Therapy can help uncover and resolve concerns whether they be founded in the present or past and can help in the relearning of a more effective approach to sleep.

Tried most other things? Why continue to suffer when help is a phone call away?

Depression (mild to moderate)

Depression may be caused by chemical imbalance in the brain and modern, non-addictive, anti-depressant drugs attempt to crudely adjust this balance. Often however it isn’t enough. Modern thinking suggests that therapy in combination with drugs is the better approach. Often depression is triggered suddenly around momentous events such as childbirth, the ending of a relationship or bereavement. It can also be generated over a period of time as a complication of other psychological difficulties, particularly anxiety. In this situation the individual may have slowly eroded their belief in the future being any brighter, hope is lost and the mood swings downwards., leading to a destructive negative loop of doubt, helplessness and pain. Guilt may also be at the root of depression.

Depression is a very common side effect of modern life. Let me help you explore it’s origins in your life and help you back onto the road of wellness.

Trauma & PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)

PTSD can start after any event where we are in danger, our life is threatened, or where we see other people dying or being injured. I have experience in helping people who are experiencing emotional and behavioural difficulties as a consequence of:

  • serious road accidents
  • violent personal assault (sexual assault, physical attack, abuse, robbery, mugging)
  • being diagnosed with a life-threatening illness

If you are experiencing “flash backs”, irrational fear, coping by “avoiding or numbing” past memories via over indulgence in work, alcohol etc. or feeling “on guard” at all times I am able to help you. You don't have to suffer. Call me now.
